**fossil peel = coal ball peel. A coal ball peel is literally a fossil. In a nutshell, a coal ball is a round accumulation of fossilized plant material from approximately 300 million years ago. My beloved father-in-law, a renowned paleobotanist, provided me with peels removed from these coal balls.
